John Edwards and Wife Elizabeth Legally Separate

Months after revealing he fathered a child with another woman, former Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. Senator John Edwards is separating from his wife of more than 30 years.

According to the Edwards’ spokesperson, John and Elizabeth Edwards have filed for legal separation. The couple lives in North Carolina, and under the state’s divorce laws couples are required to legally separate for at least 12 months before they can get divorced.

A custody and visitation arrangement regarding the couple’s youngest children has not been determined yet, nor have any arraignments been made in regarding alimony or child support.

The Edwards, who have been married since 1977, have certainly had their ups and downs. The ups being John’s success in politics and the downs being Elizabeth’s fight with breast cancer, which is now in stage four. The couple’s oldest son Wade also died in a car accident in 1996.

While the couple hasn’t given a reason for their split, one can only speculate that it has something to do with John’s affair with videographer Rielle Hunter. Furthermore, John’s former staffer, Andrew Young, is releasing a book in which he claims John told him to lie about John’s paternity of Hunter’s daughter. Last week John finally admitted he was the father of the baby girl.

Neither Elizabeth nor John has made any public statements about their separation.
